7) Jersey Ice Cream Co.

Tara Mangini and Percy Bright are traveling home designers who post amazing pics from their adventures around the world.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about how important our process is to our work. When we got our first project we were excited beyond belief. We were also broke, so we did the only thing that made sense at the time: we had someone take over our two-year lease in Brooklyn and moved into the house we were designing in Freehold, NY. We lived there for over four months demolishing, designing, renovating, and furnishing the entire house ourselves. We had to call in an emergency plumber at one point, but everything else we did with our own hands. The client let us run wild, and we designed like were at an exploratory art camp. We got to ideas we never would have without their trust, and stretched dollars in a way that still amazes me. I remember sitting, painting the bottom of some kitchen cabinets, and thinking, "This is special. One day you will cherish this moment, so cherish it now." That process–the freedom of it, the physicality of it, the things we learned from truly inhabiting that space–became the cornerstone of how we work. It is something we hold dear and believe in deeply. It's how we are able to create the work that we do, and how we are able to give the spaces we design a feeling more than just a look.
